Division 1 Communication Unit Leader
Hello
Folks,
We have just got initial notification that
ACS assistance will be requested for the
upcoming elections. (Yes, it's late
notification. But, we're famous for pulling
together and making it work in the last
minute.)
We are not sure of the plan at this time. In
years' past, we placed ACS communications
operators at all the helipads (5 of them),
supported communications to the election
officials Downtown and were extra eyes and
ears for the safety of all the election
workers and LAFD helicopter flight crews.
Operations will be from 6:30 pm through
11:30 pm (sometimes earlier) on Tuesday,
March 8th. Helipads were located at
Goodyear/Carson, West LA Veterans' Hospital,
Fire Station 88, Whiteman Airfield/Sylmar,
Piper Tech/Downtown.
This all assumes that we are using the same
plan. Please mark this date down. If you are
able to assist, please let us know. We will
send updates as soon as we know them.
Thanks and 73's.

Hello
Folks,
With the passing of Firefighter Glenn Allen,
it reminds everybody that even with the best
training, the best equipment and the best
team of fellow firefighters, the extreme
dangers and risks that firefighters are
willing to face to protect us, our families
and our neighbors.
Our condolences, thoughts and wishes goes
out to the families and friends of Glenn
Allen. Our best wishes for a full recovery
also goes to the firefighters who were
injured during the fire battle on Wednesday
night.
We have received the following from Kim at
Support Services. There will probably be a
request for volunteers to help with the
logistics and event's support honoring the
heroic actions, sacrifice and remembrances
of Glenn. If you are able to, please keep
these dates open and help out. We'll pass
along any addition information, as we
receive them, through the yahoogroups list
server.
73's, try to keep dry and stay safe.

From The President's Desk
Hello
Folks,
Well, another successful drill is now in the
training book. Many things went well, a few
things need a few tweaks and a floppy dog
got miffed by the media. So, while the
floppy dog snoozes and I'm in front of
Sleeping Beauty Castle waiting for
fireworks, I would like to thank everybody
who checked in with the drill this morning
and to those who were able to respond and
help test our staging, deployment and
message handling.
I'm sure we will be discussing this drill
during the post-net for weeks. If you have
any comment, questions, gripes or groans,
please let us know. That's what drills are
for.
Thanks to:
John Minger, Jonathan, Troy, Mercedes, Bill
Coss, Bernard, Carl, Donna, Tom Wirth, Mark
Legassie, Hans, Frank, Judy Marsh and Travis
(including the scouts and the other scout
leader whose name I can't remember at this
time.)
Thanks to the command staff:
Truman (Bark! Bark! Bark!), Mike Horst
(thanks for breakfast), Stan and Sean.
Thanks to Support Services, Carole, Ricardo,
Don and Kim.
Thanks to the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood
Council, the CERT groups in Arroyo Seco,
Hermon and Silver Lake and Councilman Huizar
and his staff.
Again, thanks! The drill was very successful
and we are planning on follow-up drills and
tweaking some procedures based on it.
Also, if I forgot to mention anybody, blame
it on the iPhone and extreme short term
memory.
So, with 15 minutes until fireworks, 73's,
have a great rest of the weekend, and
remember to keep all hands, arms, legs, feet
and head inside the vehicle at all times.

Northeast
ACS/CERT Communications Drill
The next Northeast
CERT drill will be held on Saturday,
September 11th from 9am to 12pm at Debs Park
off Monterey Rd, near Hermon. We’re
conducting a communications drill to
practice the ACS-CERT Comm plan using Family
Radio Service (FRS) radios. We’ve added an
Auxiliary Communication Service (ACS)
component to send messages going through ACS
from the Battalion, and Division using
amateur radios.
We're delighted to have a disti...nguished
elected official attending - CD 14
Councilmember Jose Huizar. Councilmember
Huizar will be attending to learn more about
ACS/CERT activities and help stimulate local
business and neighborhood councils to
contribute toward much-need communication
supplies.
Continental breakfast and coffee will be
served, compliments of Councilmember Huizar,
the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council, and
Support Service Volunteers.
The drill will be in two parts:
Part 1: 9 to 10 a.m.
Everybody meet and a small refresher on the
use of FRS radios and message handling will
be conducted.
Part 2: 10 a.m. to Noon
Incident Command Posts, relay stations and
communication teams will be deployed to
preset locations, fire stations and other
major points of interests. Simulated
messages will be passed from location to
location, up the chain to a simulated DOC/OCD.
Drill messages will be passed in both
directions in the chain to test speed,
accuracy and how well the message was
handled. This would test both the radio
equipment and operators' ability to receive,
send, log and process messages.
